One-off support in mobile money or recurring memberships: Xponsor compared with Patreon
Xponsor Support and Patreon answer the same need - letting an audience support the creator it follows - but they go about it differently. Xponsor is designed for one-off support paid in a single tap by mobile money in FCFA, while Patreon is built around monthly or annual subscriptions with tiers of exclusive content. This page is for creators in Benin, francophone Africa and the diaspora who are weighing up the two.
The short version
- Both platforms are free to begin with: on Xponsor, creating an account and publishing costs nothing and you only pay a 5% commission on support you actually receive, while Patreon says on its pricing page “Patreon is free to start. You only pay when you start earning.”
- That same Patreon pricing page states a platform fee of “10% of the income you earn on Patreon”, and adds that on top of it come “plus payment processing, currency conversion, and payout fees, and applicable taxes” (checked 20 July 2026).
- On Xponsor, the payment-provider fees are included in the amount shown to the payer: no fixed fee, no monthly subscription, no hidden cost.
- Xponsor collects in FCFA (XOF), by mobile money (MTN MoMo, Moov Money, Celtiis Cash, Mixx by Yas and more); Patreon's pricing page names PayPal, Apple Pay, Venmo, Sofort and the major cards, and advertises “16+ currencies” without naming FCFA.

Which platform to choose
When to choose Xponsor
Xponsor's advantage is narrower and very specific: a supporter in Cotonou can back you in FCFA straight from their mobile money wallet, which the payment options Patreon publishes do not cover. Creating your account and publishing your page is free, you only pay 5% on support you actually receive, the payment-provider fees are included in the amount shown to the payer, and there is no monthly subscription and no fixed fee. Your fans give in a single tap, with nothing to subscribe to, by mobile money in FCFA, approving the payment on their phone. You can drop your support button onto your own website with a single line of code, and your page stays in your own image, with a simple public handle. The same account also lets you sell tickets, create “J'y serai” badges, run a fundraiser or launch a contest.
When to choose Patreon
Patreon is the better choice when your audience is mostly outside West Africa and pays by card or PayPal, and when what you actually want to build is a recurring membership business rather than one-off support. Its whole product is designed for that: tiered monthly and annual subscriptions, a members-only content feed, gated posts and collections, and a shop for fixed-price digital products - plus a very large existing audience of people who already have a Patreon account and a payment method saved. If you publish regularly for paying subscribers in Europe or North America, want your patrons to pay in their own currency among the 16+ currencies it advertises, and don't need mobile money, Patreon gives you a deeper membership toolset than Xponsor's Support, which is deliberately focused on simple one-off support.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Xponsor cost compared with Patreon?
With Xponsor, creating an account and publishing is free: there is no monthly subscription and no fixed fee, and you pay a 5% commission only on support you actually receive, with the payment-provider fees already included in the amount shown to the payer. Patreon, on its official pricing page (https://www.patreon.com/pricing, checked 20 July 2026), says “Patreon is free to start. You only pay when you start earning.”, states a platform fee of “10% of the income you earn on Patreon” and specifies that on top of it come “plus payment processing, currency conversion, and payout fees, and applicable taxes”. Pricing changes over time, so always check the official page before deciding.
Can I receive support by mobile money and in FCFA?
With Xponsor, yes: payments run through our payment provider, which accepts mobile money (MTN MoMo, Moov Money, Celtiis Cash, Mixx by Yas, Airtel Money, Free Money), in FCFA (XOF). On Patreon's pricing page checked on 20 July 2026, the payment methods named are PayPal, Apple Pay, Venmo, Sofort and the major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express): no African mobile-money wallet is among them. That same page advertises “16+ currencies for both payouts and pay-ins” without listing them, and FCFA (XOF) is not named anywhere on it.
Does Xponsor offer monthly memberships like Patreon?
No. Xponsor Support is deliberately built for one-off support: your fans send you a contribution in a single tap, with no subscription to sign up for. Patreon's pricing page, by contrast, presents earnings as monthly and annual subscriptions and membership tiers, with one-time payments as an additional option. If your project depends on a recurring membership with exclusive content, Patreon is better equipped for that.
Can I add an Xponsor support button to my own website?
Yes. Xponsor gives you an embeddable support button that you add to your own site with a single line of code, alongside your customisable public page (rich text, emojis) reachable through a simple handle. We do not document the equivalent on Patreon here: that information is not on the pricing page we verified, and we would rather state nothing than something we have not checked.
